We are standing up against anti-trans discrimination

On September 20th there are rallies planned across the country directly attacking the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and the principles of equity and inclusion, principles which RainCity Housing continues to work to make real throughout the organization. In solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, RainCity is speaking out against these rallies both internally and externally.

The planned events in BC specifically target SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity)-inclusive education, which helps to represent the diversity of families. As an organization, we join with others to stand against hate and in full support of SOGI and related resources that make schools more inclusive, safe and welcoming for all.

Throughout North America trans people continue to experience significant and ongoing discrimination in our communities. These experiences are also present within RainCity. As an organization we have much ongoing work to do to address this form of discrimination.

We recognize that this is a deeply painful and frightening time for our trans and queer friends and loved ones, and as an organization, we stand with you. The following is a list of local supports for 2SLGBTQIA+ community members:

In response to the planned rallies there are counter-protests being organized by grassroots community groups in BC’s Lower Mainland. These three counter protests are being held on Wednesday, September 20th:

  • Coquitlam — Coquitlam City Hall, Lot A 1299 Pinetree Way — 9 am
  • Surrey — Education Minister’s Office, 9030 King George Boulevard — 12 noon
  • Vancouver — Vancouver Art Gallery, 750 Hornby Street — 12 noon

We encourage everyone to show their support in any way they can and show you stand up against hate and against anti-trans discrimination.
