Since 1982, RainCity Housing has provided housing and services for individuals dealing with mental illness, addictions, health problems and who are at high risk of being homeless. RainCity Housing has a proven reputation in social services and healthcare for providing support services to some of the most vulnerable people in Vancouver.

Job Summary:

Helps ensure tenant rooms meet health and safety requirements by providing home support services to tenants such as housekeeping, laundry, supporting tenants to learn housekeeping skills, collecting and disposing of needles, assisting staff with pest control preparation.

The Housekeeper helps tenants maintain their housing  through activities like: cleaning of rooms, helping tenants to learn housekeeping skills, collects and disposes of used needles, assists support staff with pest control. The work involves some heavy lifting such as moving mattresses, and heavy cleaning  and regular laundry. Must be physically fit to do manual labour, including a lot of bending, lifting and climbing stairs.

Clients have mental health and addiction issues; an understanding or experience of these issues is useful. The Housekeeper works in programs staffed by Support Workers who work with the clients/tenants to provide various forms of assistance.

Duties include:

  1. Perform housekeeping and home management duties for tenants such as vacuuming, sweeping and mopping floors; cleaning washing and disinfecting building areas such as walls, windows, ceilings, carpets, air vents, furniture, mattresses, blinds and washrooms; cleaning appliances; dusting; washing dishes; bagging and disposing of garbage; laundry. Uses various manual and power cleaning equipment.
  2. Work collaboratively with program staff to assess and deliver home support needs for tenants, ensuring that tenant rooms meet health and safety requirements. Attend regular meetings with program staff as required to discuss environmental health concerns, policies and procedures,
  3. Observe the tenant and their environment; report unsafe conditions and behavioural, physical, and/or mental health changes to program staff.
  4. Collect and dispose of needles in accordance with established procedures.
  5. Actively assess tenant rooms for presence of pests and rodents; inform program staff of indicators of pests/rodents; respond to pest/rodent infestations as per established policies and procedures, and as directed by the program manager, supervisor or operations manager.
  6. Assist in-coming tenants with setting up apartment, including identifying furniture and storage needs and liaising with staff to ensure needs are met. Assist out-going tenants with packing of belongings and cleaning of suite.


  • Grade 12
  • Recent related experience of 1 year.  Strong preference for experience in Vancouver Downtown East Side.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
