Community Health Worker / Home Support / Housekeeper, Princess Rooms and the Vivian

Position: Permanent full-time.

Schedule: Monday-Friday 9:30am-5:30pm, includes 30 minute unpaid meal break

*Monday and Tuesday’s are at the Vivian, Wednesday-Friday are at Princess Rooms*

Salary Range: $17.56-$18.81 per hour (bcgeu grid 3)

Job Summary: Helps ensure tenant rooms meet health and safety requirements by providing home support services to tenants such as housekeeping, laundry, supporting tenants to learn housekeeping skills, collecting and disposing of needles, assisting staff with pest control preparation.

The Vivian is a minimal barrier housing program in Vancouver specifically designed for women living with concurrent mental illness, addiction and other challenges. The facility was developed in response to the unique needs of women and is women-only, including both residents and staff. It offers a minimal barrier, high tolerance environment and follows a harm-reduction/health promotion philosophy. The Vivian screens women in (not out) of the program based on the complexities of their needs, histories and behaviours. The program is flexible, non-judgmental and responsive to the unique challenges faced by homeless women.

Princess Rooms is a minimal barrier, high tolerance environment that follows a harm-reduction/health promotion philosophy. Support workers provide an environment which is accepting of client’s lives, yet which also provides alternative experiences and opportunities. The team works collaboratively with clients and the community to create alternatives to homelessness, with the goal of a return to health, hope and stability. The program begins with a patient, persistent engagement process and harm reduction interventions in all areas of the tenant’s life. Staff work with each person to build a plan that is based on their individual strengths and motivations.

Qualifications: many forms of education and experience are valued, including volunteering and lived experience of mental illness / addiction/ homelessness;   Minimum education and experience includes:

  • Graduate of Grade 12.
  • One year of related experience.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of oppression and marginalization as related to chronically homeless individuals.
